The National Security Agency today released the first of what they claim are multiple emails proving that Edward Snowden, the former security contractor who revealed the extent of the agency’s surveillance programs nearly a year ago, did not actually “raise allegations or concerns about wrongdoing or abuse” while working as a contractor for the agency.
Snowden’s argument that he should be classified as a whistleblower and not a lawbreaker hinges on his claim that he attempted to alert the NSA to surveillance abuses multiple times, only to be blown off by management. According to the NSA, however, Snowden’s first email to them simply asked a legal question about the force of executive orders — a fairly innocuous “Presidency 101″ question — during his training, rather than alert them to any issues with mass surveillance. They also noted that Snowden never followed up with them on this subject.
“There are numerous avenues that Mr. Snowden could have used to raise other concerns or whistleblower allegations,” the NSA wrote on their Tumblr account. “We have searched for additional indications of outreach from him in those areas and to date have not discovered any engagements related to his claims.”
