A California cop choked and beat a man for jaywalking Monday in an incident captured on video that is now going viral.
The video was recorded by a woman named Naomi Montaie, who was sitting in her car as the altercation unfolded in front of her, showing a Sacramento police officer grabbing the young man by the neck while shoving him down on the street.
The Sacramento cop then sits on top of the man while throwing several punches to his face.
The man, Nandi Cain Jr, does not appear to be fighting back or resisting, contrary to what police will probably say once they get their story together.
As of now, they are not saying anything other than they “tried to stop a man for a violation,” according to Fox 40.
But they did tell Montaie that they had stopped him for jaywalking, which apparently is a serious crime in Sacramento or more likely, a revenue generator.
She says officers who questioned her after the incident told her they were trying to stop Cain for jaywalking.
She doesn’t understand how jaywalking could have come to what she witnessed.
“I just want some answers. What happened?” said Cain’s live-in girlfriend Antoinette Stewart.
She says she fell in love with his goofy, spirited personality two years ago and can’t imagine why something like this would happen.
She can imagine him cutting across a street in his long walk home from his co-manager job at a TV store, but as far as her knowledge of him breaking any laws?
“Never been to jail. Never been arrested ever,” Stewart said.
When asked, Sacramento police could only tell FOX40 by phone that an officer tried to stop a man for a violation at Cypress and Grand around 5 p.m.
The video does not capture the moments that led to the beatdown, but it begins by showing Cain standing in the middle of the street with a cop in front of him.
The cop is giving him some type of orders, but he appears to be refusing to abide by those orders because Montaie is telling him, “nephew, just listen.”
She told Fox 40 that he is not her blood nephew, but a young man from the neighborhood she was gotten to know over the years.
At one point, Cain takes off his jacket and lays it on the street, which the cop will surely claim made him fear for his life because that is when he walks up to him, grabs him by the neck and throws him down to beat him in the street.
“He just got off work,” Montaie says as more cops arrive.
Montaie posted the video to her Facebook page where it has amassed almost 75,000 views in 12 hours.
Sacramento police would not provide any more details or comments about the incident nor would they say if the incident was captured on body or dash cam.
But when they eventually do release a statement, it will probably say something about “safety.”
However, the video shows the officer had no regard for anybody’s safety.
