The Ugly Truth about College Accreditation
In the end, bureaucracy always gives birth to more bureaucracy. The economic environment of a school (e.g., costs, value, budgetary planning, etc.) is completely altered for reasons that have little to do with academic supply and demand.

The Exponential Growth of Insecurity
The Exponential Growth of Insecurity
Paul Craig Roberts
There is no such thing as cyber security. The only choice is more security or less security, as the recent hack of the National Security Agency demonstrates.
Hackers stole from NSA a cyber weapon, which has been used in attacks (at time of writing) on 150 countries, shutting down elements of the British National Health Service, the Spanish telecommunications company Telefonica, automakers Renault and Nissan, Russia’s Interior Ministry, Federal Express, the energy company PetroChina, and many more. -

How Israeli schools help sabotage peace prospects
A display of Israeli-style community policing before an audience of hundreds of young schoolchildren was captured on video. It shows four officers staging a mock anti-terror operation. As the “terrorist” lies badly wounded, the officers empty their magazines into him from close range. In Israel it is known as “confirming the kill”. Everywhere else it is called murder.

Does Your Politics Determine Your View of Science?
It's easy to criticize conservatives who reject scientific findings but it's not so easy to see one's own biases. And it is not just academics who are guilty of this. Research indicates that when liberals and conservatives read books on the same topic, they are selectively consuming media that reinforces their own ideology.

How Do You Degrow An Economy, Without Causing Chaos?
‘Houston, we have a problem’. On the one hand, there is growing acceptance among environmentally conscious people that rich nations and affluent regions of the global economy must dramatically reduce overall resource and energy consumption levels – that is, undergo a process of ‘degrowth’ – if humanity is to bring about a sustainable world order. On the other hand, we[Read More...]

Microsoft on NSA and the WannaCrypt exploits
Finally, this attack provides yet another example of why the stockpiling of vulnerabilities by governments is such a problem. This is an emerging pattern in 2017. We have seen vulnerabilities stored by the CIA show up on WikiLeaks, and now this vulnerability stolen from the NSA has affected customers around the world. Repeatedly, exploits in the hands of governments have leaked into the public domain and caused widespread damage. An equivalent scenario with conventional weapons would be the U.S. military having some of its Tomahawk missiles stolen.

The Future Is A Pluriverse
Some believe that the commons are incompatible with commodity markets. Others claim that markets and commons may form mutually beneficial relations with each other. What are your own views on this issue? The Log Tax Is Harming Both Americans and Canadians
I was in Vancouver barely a week after President Trump’s imposition of 20% tariffs on logs imported from Canada. It was also just days before elections that would determine which party controlled the British Columbia Legislature and, thereby, who would serve as the province’s next Premier.
The timing was superb for enjoying the sites of Vancouver but not so good for Trump’s tariffs. Incumbent Premier Christy Clark suggested retaliation in the form of restrictions or an outright ban on thermal coal from the U.S. -

Economic Theory Really Is Pro-Immigration
There are four economic biases widely held in society, all of which are far from harmless. But the most potentially harmful is the anti-foreign bias. This one underestimates the economic benefits of interaction with foreigners, including immigrants, and leads to protectionism and anti-immigration policies. But even a partial liberalization of immigration restrictions would, in the long-term, contribute to improving the standards of living globally.

A group of artists, environmentalists, entrepreneurs, and locals gathered in mid-April along the Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands to witness an exciting moment: The sinking of the Kodiak Queen, 1 of 5 boats that survived Pearl Harbor. But this wasn’t for entertainment purposes. The ship had been transformed by the group months before into both a tourist attraction, and a way of drawing attention and conservation efforts to the region’s dying coral reef populations. [1]
