Mercantilism has experienced a deplorable revival with the emergence of 21th-century protectionism. Socialists, under whatever semantic guise they prefer, have always had protectionist inclinations. Instead, what characterizes 21th-century protectionism is populist proselytes propagating pernicious delusions about free trade.
