With Gorbachev’s approval, Yakovlev began the program of “perestroika” ("restructuring" in English) which “restructured” the Soviet Empire into a pile of rubble in less than five years. Reflecting back on the period years later, he wrote, “That victory in the Cold War is our common victory.”
