The temperature in Peterborough plunged to -30.5 C early Thursday morning, feeling more like -37 C with the wind chill, according to Environment Canada.The peak low temperature, which happened around 5 a.m. Thursday, smashed the all-time low temperature for Peterborough of -30 C set in 1933, according to Environment Canada records that date back to 1866.It could have been even worse as the Arctic air mass continues to set in across southern Ontario: the Muskoka Airport had a record low of -36.4 C, North Bay Airport had a record low of -33.9 C and Barrie had a record low of -32.9 C.Record lows for Dec. 28 were also broken in Kingston, Toronto, Niagara Falls, Kitchener, Windsor and Wiarton, Environment Canada says.Peterborough and the Kawarthas remains under an extreme cold weather warning from Environment Canada, which also now covers most areas of central Ontario, eastern Ontario, northeastern Ontario and a huge swath of southwestern Quebec.
Extreme Cold in TO breaks 57 year record
The winter we're currently living through just saw temperatures dip to -22 C on Dec. 28 for the first time in recorded history.
Toronto (obviously) remains under an extreme cold weather alert as a series of cold weather systems continues to roll through Southern Ontario.A period of "very cold wind chills" is expected today, according to Environment Canada, with wind chill values of minus 30 or below recorded already in the city this morning.
Warming centres are public buildings, including city halls, municipal offices, community centres, arenas and libraries, that welcome anyone inside during regular business hours to warm up during extreme cold events.Warming centres are located all over the region, including Waterloo, Kitchener, Cambridge, North Dumfries, Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich.
Extreme cold is a danger to everyone, although the risk is greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.
