The African city Kinshasa, despite having a population that is bigger than London's and being one of the world's fastest growing cities, is only slightly better connected to the global economy than the North Pole. This and other African cities are centers of consumption and extraction of power elites, as opposed to centers of commerce and production.

Last weekend we noted in, post about the galloping inequality inherent in urbanization that Richard Florida was warning that "Young, affluent, highly educated people have flowed back to downtown cores in cities like London, New York, San Francisco and Vancouver. Good jobs, better restaurants, higher tax revenues and even high-tech startups have followed.

Key Report: Hundreds of Native Bee Species Buzzing Toward Extinction

The Center for Biological Diversity has published a first-of-its-kind comprehensive review of more than 4,000 native bee species in North America. The report indicates that more than half the species with sufficient data are declining. Nearly 1 in 4 is racing towards extinction due to increased pesticide and other factors. [1]
