What makes a successful revolution? Has there ever been one? Looking at Egypt’s current situation, two and a half years after the fall of Mubarak, what have we learned about the revolutionary process, about its failures and successes? How does this relate to the global imperial system, and how can people within the imperial powers play a part in these foreign revolutions?

Introduction: Brazil has witnessed one of the world’s most striking socio-economic reversals in modern history: from a dynamic nationalist industrializing to a primary export economy. Between the mid 1930’s to the mid 1980’s, Brazil averaged nearly 10% growth in its manufacturing sector largely based on state interventionist policies, subsidizing, protecting and regulating the growth of national public and private enterprises.
At the end of World War II, the United States had half the world’s wealth with only 5% of the world’s population, and stated explicitly that its objectives in foreign policy were designed to “maintain this disparity.” George C. Marshall, former Secretary of State, noted at the time that there was a “world revolution” among “the little people,” who were rising up against the centuries of domination by Western colonial powers.
