Why Do More People Go To The Polls In Iran Than In The U.S. Nowadays?

In 2008, when Obama faced off against John McCain, turnout for an American presidential election was relatively high-- 63.7%. This past year it fell to 55%. France's voter turnout ion their presidential election earlier this month was also down-- to around 65%. Yesterday Iran voted. The voter turnout was around 70%, higher than turnout in any US election since 1900. Why is that? Well there could be a number of reasons-- some existential, but in Iran Election Day is a national holiday; people get off work to vote.

Crackpot Lamar Smith Is Leading The Charge In The Republican Party's War On Science

Body cam footage obtained by PINAC shows two Texas cops enter a man’s home, apparently without a warrant, then tackle and taser the man while pinning him onto a couch.
All because the 48-year-old man stood up from his recliner and remained standing after one of the cops ordered him to sit back down.
“Have a seat for me,” said Buda police officer Demerriell Young, who has a history of abuse.

On the Rio Grande, Commerce Survives by the Honor System

Along the winding trail that leads to the hot springs, there are crafts for sale made by Mexican artisans and a small jar to collect the money. Nobody attends the booth in the daytime, as it would be illegal for someone to cross the river and enter the country without going through proper channels (in fact, it’s unlikely that these artisans have passports). The jar collects money via the honor system, expecting patrons to contribute based on the price tags affixed to the artisan goods.
