A powerful teachers union lobbied the CDC to change the school-reopening guidance that was released in February. Teachers' unions across the United States rallied to keep schools closed during the pandemic, ignoring a body of scientific evidence that said it’s safe to teach students face-to-face.

Matt Meyer is President of the Berkeley Federation of Teachers and has fought to keep schools closed in his district, demanding that all educators get vaccinated before reopening schools as part of of his criteria.

The White House has set a goal of reopening 50% of US schools for a minimum of one day per week. Investigative report reveals that over $100-billion has been spent to reopen schools, but the biggest school districts are still closed due to pressure from teachers' unions. (Teachers are paid even when they don't teach.)
