Soviet Union

Russians are asked to name their favourite era since 1917. The results will irk western Russophobes

A recent poll asked Russians to name their favourite political era since the Revolutions of 1917. Unsurprisingly, the Putin era and the Brezhnev era are nearly tied with 32% voting for the Putin era and 29% favouring the Brezhnev era. The only reason for the slight gap is that many young Russians cannot remember the Brezhnev era first hand.

5 reasons Ukraine will soon cease to exist

As the fascist forces escalate their aggression against the Donbass Republics, many are questioning what the future of the Republic of Ukraine will look like in the medium and long term. The state as presently compromised will not survive but a few more years at the very most.
History is full of states coming and going/changing their borders. The idea that this state will evaporate into the annals of history is not novel. It will be one of many.
Here’s why.
1. There is no historical precedent for such a state

April 16 will be the day the Turkish Republic dies

The modern Turkish Republic was founded on 23 October 1923.
It was founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, a man who wanted to break fully from the Ottoman past and forge a new nation-state based on the principles of secularism, modernity, and education that would include a Latin script for the Turkish language.
Perhaps most interestingly, he was also a man who forged a good relationship with Vladimir Lenin of the Soviet Union after centuries of war between Ottoman Turkey and Tsarist Russia.

The Southern Movement and the ambiguities of the civil war in Yemen

There is a temptation among many commentators to paint the current Civil War in Yemen as a straight forward war between  pro-Iranian Houthi Shi’as loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh and the forces loyal to deposed President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, who are supported by America, Britain and Saudi Arabia.
Of course there are also al-Qaeda and ISIS forces in the country fighting a kind of Saudi proxy war on top of the official Saudi war.

Frank Zappa: one of America’s greatest dissidents

One of my favourite American dissidents has always been and remains Frank Zappa. Zappa defies categorisation in terms of group allegiance, but as an individual, his views were remarkably coherent.
Zappa started his professional musical career in 1950s California, but before one thinks of a kind of proto-Beach Boy, Zappa’s California was the barren Mojave Desert (pre shopping mall days). He eventually made it to Los Angeles where he became to the hippy movement what Voltaire was to the French Enlightenment.

How Dominance, Authority, and Control Work in a Zionist Context

From observing the Zionist expressions of power, one stands out above the rest: Dominance. Because it is an umbrella covering various forms of power and influence, dominance is versatile. In the politics of power, dominance is such a force that it can generate authority, adulation, and appeal for association. This phenomenon could happen anywhere and in any society regardless of the personal beliefs of those who acknowledge the Dominance Factor and work within its rules. However, our focus here is Authority.
