The Russian Foreign Ministry and US State Department have both confirmed that Rex Tillerson is to have talks with Sergei Lavrov on the 11th and 12th of April in Moscow.
This will be Tillerson’s first visit to Moscow since becoming Secretary of State under President Trump, although Tillerson is familiar with Moscow and has previously spoken with President Putin in his capacity as a businessman.
It is not yet clear whether Tillerson will meet with Putin, though the possibility remains open.
A statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry read,

Speaking in Geneva, Gennady Gatilov, Sergei Lavrov’s deputy at the Russian Foreign Ministry, gave a brief statement to the press, clarifying Russia’s much misunderstood position regarding a Syrian peace settlement.
Gatilov is a gentle, soft spoken man.  At times he is too gentle, as many in Russia tend to be when faced with the onslaught of both western imperial aggression as well as the terrorist aggression of foreign fighters, currently plaguing the territory of their Syrian ally.

Sergey Shoigu, Russia’s Minister of Defence, is not a man one wants to anger. He has held his position since 2012 and has been in charge of Russia’s biggest military operation since 1979, aiding Syria in her war against terrorism.
Unlike his US counterpart James ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis, Shoigu has held multiple governmental positions prior to assuming his current position including, Governor of Moscow Oblast, leader of the currently governing party United Russia, and Minister for Emergency Situations (EMERCOM).

Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov has stated his desire to arrange a meeting with Donald Trump’s Secretary of State Rex Tillerson at the soonest possible date in order to discuss the pressing issues of Syria and the war in Donbass. As the lyrics to the T. Rex song go, ‘Get it on’.
But there is a problem when it comes to getting it on, most of Trump and Tillerson’s new team are not yet in place.
Lavrov stated the problem quite clearly,

Many in Syria had questioned Russia’s motives for the region after the publication of a draft constitution which appeared to suggest that federalisation might be an option in the future, particularly in Kurdish regions. Syrian Envoy to the UN, Dr. Bashar al- Jaafari patently rejected such proposals.

With Donald Trump remaining consistent in his rhetoric about his desire to have better and more cooperative relations with Russia whilst continuing his verbal attacks on Iran, many have suspected that Russia, a strategic Iranian ally, might adopt the role of mediator in the dispute.
