Last week, the EPA accidentally spilled millions of gallons of pollutants into the Animas River in Colorado, turning the water a deep mustard-yellow and, in some places, orange. The contaminants are believed to include dissolved iron, zinc, and copper.
Our friends at Unist’ot’en Camp got visited by Klanada’s swiniest and we dropped everything and went to their territory to provide video support, as we have been doing for the past five years. We helped produce a couple of videos that got over half a million views and helped the Unist’ot’en get media attention, and much needed financial and physical support. The situation is rapidly developing and we will continue to support this shining example of grassroots Indigenous resistance.
The importance of cleaning up our oceans has become a front-and-center issue, as it should be. From a 19-year-old’s creation of an ocean clean-up array meant to clean up the ‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch’ to the development of eco-friendly plastic alternatives, we’re all doing our best to save one of the most precious resources we have on this planet.
If you could make a change, a single change to society that could illuminate its most pressing issues, bring them to the forefront and propose new solutions to many of society’s oldest problems, you would do it, wouldn’t you? If this change could help many, even if none of the people helped were you, yet no one could be harmed, you would quite probably wish for this change to occur, would you not? Perhaps even take action to help enact it? Vote on it? Sign a petition?
Climate change/global warming is the main protagonist on the worldwide stage of collapsing ecosystems.
The ecosystem is a combination of living organisms in harmony with nonliving elements like air, water, and mineral soil interacting as one whole. But, what if the living and nonliving elements stop interrelating as “one harmonized whole”? Then, what happens?
As things stand today, the planet’s future is decidedly in the camp of “then, what happens?”
Indigenous Venezuelans blocked the landing strip of Canaima National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in protest at illegal miners destroying their lives and lands.
As if we needed another reason to turn to alternative fuels with the enormous dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico still lingering due to BP Oil’s refusal to clean up their mess, pictures have come in from the oil pipeline rupture near Santa Barbara that initially sent 21,000 gallons (of a total 101,000 gallons released) of crude oil into the Pacific Coast waters – an incident that happened in late May.
Apple Blossom School has a nice ring to it, as does the Orchard View School at its side. The nearby Tree House Hollow pre-school, with children as young as two and three years old, continues this agrarian theme. These names evoke a pleasant scene of trees with students, teachers, and staff relaxing outside during recesses, as in old-fashioned one-room schools.
We are fossil fools. In fact, fossil fuel companies have been playing us for fools for so long that we barely notice their power, their control, and the destructive consequences these monolithic companies have over us; that is, until directly affected. Subtle exploitation is all around, but special harm has come through deepwater drilling off our coast or penetration of our shale with the ravages of fracking.
