Only President Daniel Ortega’s commitment to peace has prevented an even worse conflict. Newly Declassified Documents Detail Chiquita’s Use Of Armed Paramilitaries In Colombia

For years, Chiquita Brands International’s Colombia-based offices paid money to armed groups to guarantee that their personnel and facilities would not be harmed during the country’s civil war, according to a new report by Verdad Abierta and the National Security Archive.
The armed groups, according to the report, include paramilitaries, the Colombian Army and leftist guerillas.

Colombia’s Killing Fields

Colombia has received more US military aid — over $6 billion dollars in the past decade — than any country in the Western Hemisphere. For its part, Colombia allowed the Pentagon to build seven military bases, more than all the other countries in the region combined. There are over 2,000 US military officers and private US ‘mercenary’ contractors engaged in military activities in Colombia – more than any other country in Latin America.

Colombia’s Labyrinth of Violence

On May 16 of this year, in the rural Colombian town of Jardines de Sucumbíos (In the department of Narino), farmer Leonardo Obando offered the first floor of his home to four guests who had spent the day preparing for the town’s mother’s day festivities. The four men were: Brayan Yatacue Secue, Jose Antonio Acanamejoy, Jose Yinder Esterilla, and 15 year-old Deivi Lopez Ortega, all members of the agricultural union FENSUAGRO.
