For the first time in more than a year, the Massachusetts attorney general’s office has been prompted to take action against government officials who have violated the state’s public records law.
That’s good news, but it’s also the latest reminder that Massachusetts state officials treat transparency as a joke.
Two Massachusetts police officers denied a teenager access to his anti-seizure medication, causing him to experience “a potentially life-threatening series of seizures that required hospitalization,” according to a civil rights lawsuit filed Wednesday.
Eurie Stamps, 68, a grandfather and retired Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority worker, was not suspected of any crime when police assaulted him inside his home and shot him dead shortly after midnight on January 5, 2011.
Now, more than five years later, Stamps’ family has reached a settlement with the town of Framingham, which to this day employs Stamps’ killer.
Details of the settlement, which was made Friday, have not yet been made public.
But the one thing that is clear is that Stamps is one of the countless victims of the government’s war on drugs.
A new study by researchers at Harvard University shows that the water supplies of nearly 6 million Americans are tainted with unsafe levels of polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances, or PFASs – a class of industrial chemicals linked to potentially serious health problems. [1]
PFASs have been used for decades in a wide variety of industrial and commercial products, including non-stick coatings on pans, food wrappers, water-repellent clothing, and firefighting foam.

It took two months but authorities arrested two police officers Tuesday who were caught on video beating a suspect after he had surrendered.
The beating took place on May 11 after a high-speed car chase that spanned two states; an adventure that ended in New Hampshire when suspect Richard Simone stopped his truck on a dead-end street, stepped out and fell to his knees in attempt to lay down on the ground.

The Massachusetts wiretapping law makes it a felony to surreptitiously audio record anyone — even police officers and other government employees, and even when in a public place.
But a lawsuit filed Thursday by the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts argues that the law is “unconstitutional as applied to the secret recording of police officers performing their duties in public.”
