In 1917 the young Soviet state declared the 8th of March a public holiday celebrating the contribution of women to society. In 1965 it became a non-working day for all Soviet citizens.
It remains a special day in Russia when women are given flowers, read poems and where women receive favours from boys and men. Incidentally, the 23rd of February is Defender of the Fatherland Day, informally known as Men’s Day. On this day Russian women honour the sacrifices men have made over the centuries to keep Russia sovereign and peaceful.

Anyone who knows anything about Soviet politics, understands the process of  a public figure being officially rehabilitated by the state.
Essentially, when a public figure is officially condemned by the authorities, months, years or sometimes decades later he or she can be rehabilitated. It’s as if to say, ‘we were wrong, he was actually a patriot and a good guy after all’.

Alexandrov Choir gives first performance since tragic plane crash

On the 25th of December, 2016, a plane crash off the coast of Sochi killed the majority of the Alexandrov Choir, the most beloved vocal ensemble in Russia.
The tragedy was felt not only in Russia but around the world where for decades the Alexandrov Choir has delighted audiences from China to America, Britain to Finland.
The ill-fated plane was en route to Syria where the choir was due to perform for Russian and Syria troops during the Christmas season.
