This week, Russian forces have successfully secured yet another abandoned illegal US military base in Syria. Numerous facilities were left empty following the announcement in October by US President Donald Trump that American forces would withdrawal from Syria.
The latest US base to be taken is located at Tal Samin, situated along a key highway which joins Raqqa with other parts of Syria.

The October decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to withdraw American troops from northeastern Syria did not only precipitate the Turkish offensive, codenamed ‘Operation Peace Spring’, into Kurdish-held territory which followed. It also sparked an outcry of hysteria from much of the so-called “left” that has been deeply divided during the 8-year long conflict over its Kurdish question. If we make it out of the climate emergency, we may come to view the few decades usually described simply as the Cold War that followed the Second World War as halcyon days – at least relative to what we are facing now.
The Cold War was a power struggle between two economic empires for global domination – between the United States and its vassal states, including Europe, on one side, and Russia and its vassal states lumped together into the Soviet Union, on the other. The fight was between a US-led capitalism and what was styled as a Soviet-led “communism”.
Turkey recently threatened to send 1,200 ISIS terrorists back to their countries of origin in the EU, the U.S., and the UK. Turkey’s Interior Minister, Suleyman Solyu, claimed that extradition would begin on Monday, November 11, ironically on Armistice Day. Ankara claimed it would even send back those whose citizenships have been revoked. How Turkey plans to follow through with this threat is another matter.
The latest incident brings to mind shades of The Terminal, a 2004 Hollywood comedy-drama by Steven Spielberg about an Eastern European man who ends up stranded at JFK Airport’s terminal in New York after being denied entry into the US and his defunct native country. Only in this edition, the ‘stateless’ man’s home was the Islamic State of Syria and Sham (ISIS).
