A crisis is brewing in Thailand as the outcome of a contentious court case threatens to plunge the country into chaos. This case, the final verdict of which is expected to be delivered on Aug. 25, centers around a corruption scandal involving former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra — a member of the Shinawatra political dynasty, which has long been backed by U.S. interests.

The American boogeyman of terrorist threats, often used to further war and military intervention, comes with domestic consequences. In the United States, Muslim houses of worship have been inundated with threats of bodily harm and property destruction, as well as seen items like pig’s heads and desecrated Qurans left on their doorsteps.

Most of us living in the West have never known hunger. In America, food shelves are easily accessed by the most vulnerable of society.
Despite living in a time where there is a global surplus of food, millions of people around the world are still suffering from famine. If you follow mainstream media coverage about these humanitarian disasters, they’re most likely presented through the lens of climate change, high food prices and taxes.
