In the Wake of Mass Shootings, Parents Reconsider Mass Schooling

In the wake of recent tragic school shootings, anxious parents are contemplating homeschooling to protect their children. After February’s school shooting in Parkland, Florida, the Miami Herald reported that more parents were considering the homeschooling option. And after Friday’s disturbing school shooting in Sante Fe, Texas, a local ABC news affiliate in Alabama reported the increasing appeal of homeschooling.

How Mass Schooling Perpetuates Inequality

For some kids, schooling brings out the very worst in them. Unable to conform to mass schooling's mores, they get a label: troubled, slow learner, at-risk. They carry these scarlet letters with them throughout their entire education, emerging not with real skills and limitless opportunity, but further entrenched in their born disadvantage. 

Homeschool is Booming, New Study Shows

According to the latest data, there are over 1.8 million homeschoolers nationwide. That's 3.4% of the overall US K-12 school-age population. More and more, parents of diverse races, ethnicities, and backgrounds are making the choice to educate their kids outside of traditional public schools. Even if it means paying twice for education.
