This week my sister Emma joined me to discuss Brady Corbet’s latest film Vox Lux, which tells the story of a young girl Celeste surviving a school shooting and becoming a pop star. We started by discussing the film itself and it’s interesting narrative structure. We also touched on some of the flaws in the film. We then moved onto the main plot points and themes in the film. Emma and I discussed the role that pop music plays in our lives and how trauma and tragedy connects to it. We touched on 9/11 which plays a role throughout the film.

Chicago Protesters Call for Resignation of Mayor Rahm Emanuel over Increase in Gun Violence that Killed 12 over the Weekend

About 200 protesters shut down a busy street in a wealthy area in Chicago expressing outrage over Chicago’s gun violence and calling for the resignation of Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Chicago recently recorded its deadliest weekend of he year with 66 people shot and 12 murdered. Rahm Emanuel, acknowledged that there are too may criminals on the street when they should be in jail. He also said there are too many guns on the streets, which is ironic inasmuch as guns are tightly controlled in Chicago.

China Warns Tourists to US of Gun Violence, Extreme Weather, Rampant Crime

WASHINGTON — The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Washington issued a starkly-worded travel advisory this week for summer tourists traveling to the United States, explaining in so many words that traveling to the country could be hazardous to one’s health unless one takes proper precautions.
The advisory reads in large part like a virtual laundry list of U.S. social problems, naming the exorbitant cost of healthcare, frequent crime, and gun violence as potential threats to traveler safety:
