Gun Control

The mainstream media is quiet because Chicago has the toughest gun control laws in the country, yet they have one of the highest murder rates, indicating that gun control does not work. The media also failed to report on violent gangs of teens who swamped the Miracle Mile upscale shopping area, and 19 people were arrested on charges of mob activity, battery and weapons possession. The mayhem comes less than a month after similar mob actions were reported on the famed retail strip.

Florida: David Hogg, the student activist who emerged from the Parkland high-school shooting, organized a "die-in" at a Publix supermarket over its donations to a Republican candidate running for governor who was supported by the NRA. The market chain responded by canceling all political donations, including those to organizations that fund Planned Parenthood and gun control. [...]

I'm not so sure about former Education Secretary Arne Duncan idea about parents pulling their children out of school until elected officials pass stricter gun control laws. That would be alike a dream come true for conservatives who don't want kids from poor homes going to school anyway and who believe only kids from wealthy families need to be educated. I prefer a different approach.

Frequently we see the case against gun control entirely grounded upon a Constitutional defense of the Second Amendment. While the Founding Fathers’ warnings about the importance of defending liberty with an armed populace are as important today as they have ever been, this approach has some flaws.

A shooting last Friday at the Santa Fe High School in Texas left ten people dead, stirring up calls for gun control. There are some troubling aspects of this case: a doctor said that they are always "prepared for these drills", the media is silent about the second suspect, and a student witness said, "It was real this time, it wasn't real last time," implying there was a prior incident. As expected, Congress has done nothing to address the problem, well, nothing but stick more bribes from the NRA cash into their pockets. Their silence is for sale and blood remains on their hands. At least Lady MacBeth was capable of feeling guilt for a murder.

Vermont's PVI is D+15 and Hillary beat Trump there 178,573 (55.72%) to 95,369 (30.27%). Trump won just one of Vermont's 14 counties (Essex, the least populated). Florida is a more swingy state, although the PVI is R+2. Although Obama won Florida both times he ran, Hillary gave up on the state's crucial 29 electoral votes. Trump beat her (narrowly)-- 4,617,886 (49.0%) to 4,504,975 (47.8%).
