The problem, in a nutshell, is this: when people decide to support a prospective candidate in the US primary races they are putting themselves in the position of defending the indefensible. The very nature of this politico-Darwinist death match means that once you pick your chosen leader you must reject all criticism and suppress all doubt. You must become aggressively defensive and you must, above all, prevent your own wayward brain from thinking those bad thoughts that weaken the image of the immaculate leader.
Whatever happens with Donald Trump’s candidacy- whether he rides his durable poll numbers to the Republican nomination, runs as an independent, or withdraws from the race completely- the ideas he’s introduced to the mainstream political dialogue will have a long shelf life.
He’s “unhinged, offensive, reprehensible,” and “ridiculous.” His proposals are “unconstitutional.” He’s a “racist, xenophobic, religious bigot” who doesn’t understand “our laws” or “our history.” He must be rejected by all “real” Americans.
Trump must wonder what he has to say to finally be booted if not institutionalized for wanting to ban Muslim travel to the US. Because you know he has absolutely no desire to be POTUS. None. But everything he says is met with resounding approbation and applause. America has become an asylum. And I’m your guide.
