When I first met Julian Assange more than ten years ago, I asked him why he had started WikiLeaks. He replied: “Transparency and accountability are moral issues that must be the essence of public life and journalism.”
In a recent online interview, Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg talks about the possibility of Julian Assange being tried in the US under the Espionage Act for publishing classified material.
Joe Lauria, Editor in Chief of Consortium News, spoke to Ellsberg during an ‘online vigil’ for the WikiLeaks founder and editor organized by Unity4J.com.
A top lawyer for The New York Times said Tuesday that prosecuting WikiLeaks and Julian Assange for publishing leaked documents “would set a terrible precedent for journalists,” Courthouse News reports.
