Last week, the president and CEO of Smithfield Foods, one of the nation’s largest meat-processing companies, warned of “severe, perhaps disastrous” consequences for the country’s meat-supply chain following the closure of several of its plants.

The food supply line has been broken by government COVID-19 policies. Farmers are not allowed to process their own live stock and must send them to commercial processors, yet six large processing plants are shut down from coronavirus absenteeism and federal unemployment programs.
