First Case of the Plague in the United States for 2016

If you think the Plague is something of our ancestors’ medieval past, think again. It has been confirmed that a 16-year-old New Mexico boy is suffering from the first confirmed case of the Plague of 2016. Officials state that the boy is thankfully recovering and that they will be informing those in his neighborhood of the potential risks and symptoms of this poorly understood illness.

IARC: Coffee NOT Carcinogenic, but Scalding Hot Beverages Probably Are

I have written so much about the health benefits of coffee, almost always while sipping a hot cup while sharing information on one of my favorite beverages. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) had been evaluating whether the extremely popular beverage was carcinogenic, and I crossed my fingers and held my breath. The agency announced its conclusion yesterday: it will not classify coffee as carcinogenic.

FDA Approves Stomach Pump Device for Weight Loss

On Tuesday, the FDA approved a stomach pump, described by some as a “reverse feeding tube,” to help people lose weight. The strange weight-loss device is basically an external pump that dumps part of the stomach contents into the toilet.
The AspireAssist device is approved for use in morbidly-obese people, and helps them lose an average of 12% of body weight, which is significantly more than pills or most diets.

Teen with Autism Receives 10,000 Birthday Cards

Hallee Sorenson, who has autism, had her 18th birthday party at a bowling alley. The excited teen was ready for all of her friends to show up and wish her well, however she was devastated when not one person showed up. Instead of spending her 18th birthday party socializing and eating cake, she spent her special day crying.
Hallee’s cousin, Rebecca Guildford, was heartbroken for her relative. She said, “Hallee is funny, sweet, caring, smart, an athlete, a jigsaw puzzle champion, a wonderful student, and a best friend to all.”
