Scientists Identify Neurons that Tell You to Stop Drinking

Millions of people in the United States and abroad suffer from alcoholism, having difficulty controlling their urge to drink heavily. However, scientists say that they have now identified a particular neuron that once activated, can help a person stop drinking alcohol. The team at Texas A&M University is confident that this could be a huge step forward in the fight against alcoholism, and may even work to prevent people from drinking in the first place.

Study: Breast Cancer Survivors Who Exercise Have Fewer Memory Problems

Northwestern Medicine in conjunction with University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign recently reported that women who had survived breast cancer and exercised regularly reported fewer memory problems than those who didn’t exercise. Memory problems are a common issue amongst breast cancer survivors, however it was found that moderate-to-vigorous physical activity could help curtail some of the cognition problems.

Utah Woman First Zika-Related Death in the Continental US

Utah health officials have confirmed that an elderly woman who passed away in late June has died after contracting the Zika virus. The unnamed woman did not contract the virus in the United States, but had traveled to a country where Zika was known to be. The woman also had many underlying health issues that likely contributed to her death in addition to the infection.
Health officials in Utah, however, state that there is no immediate risk in Utah for the Zika virus if one has not traveled to a country where it is prevalent.

San Diego Teens Serve Hot Meals to Homeless

The San Diego based Burrito Boyz have been serving up hot meals to the homeless of San Diego for years now. So far, they’ve served up 132,000 meals for the needy of the area.
The group of kids, teens and young adults, started in 2010, with momentum gathering in 2011. They’ve been featured more than once on their local news outlet and in their local paper. In 2013, they were featured on the Queen Latifah Show and in January, 2014, had a full page spread in People Magazine. They’ve also made appearances in the Huffington Post and on Yahoo News, to name a few.

House Overwhelmingly Passes Opioid Abuse Bill

On July 8, the House approved an agreement between itself and the Senate on bipartisan legislation intended to tackle the burgeoning opioid crisis in America.
Following the 407-5 vote, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016 (CARA) is expected to move quickly through the Senate and head to President Barack Obama’s desk to be signed into law.

Study Shows Some Genes Activate After Death

According to a new study, life does go on after death, at least for your genes. For some animals, their genes may remain turned on for up to four days after death. This discovery can be used to help in preserving organs for transplants and determining when a victim of a murder was killed.
Scientists have even discovered that genes associated with creating an embryo and cancer can actually turn on and remain increasingly-active after death.
