Study Suggests Vaginal Ring May Protect Against HIV in Women

A small silicone ring, known as the dapivirine ring, may protect as many as 75 percent of women using it from contracting HIV, the virus that leads to AIDS. The ring is inserted into the vagina and infused with a special antiviral drug, called dapivirine. Researchers say the findings are especially important in countries where there is a cultural taboo for women refusing sex, even with their husbands, and may not have a say in whether or not he wears a condom.

Study: Ducks May Be Able to Think in an Abstract Manner

A new study finds that ducks can actually think in an abstract manner at less than 24 hours old. It seems that they can learn objects, the differences between objects, imprint on them, and their relationships to one another.
In the past, researchers thought that animals, especially ducks, could only grasp these concepts after a significant amount of training. However, this new study has blown that completely out of the water, showing that even newly-hatched ducklings can tell the difference between objects and their relationships to one another within 30 minutes.

Dannon Unveils Non-GMO, Less-Sugar Yogurt in the U.S.

On July 13, Dannon executives unveiled Dannon and Oikos Greek yogurt products containing more natural and non-GMO ingredients. [1]
The company plans to highlight the non-GMO ingredients on all of its product packaging. It is also ensuring that by the end of 2018, all cows that supply milk for these products (as well as its Danimals brand) will be fed non-GMO feed, which will impact some 80,000 acres of farmland.

Animal Shelter Uses Pokemon Go Craze for Walking Dogs

An animal shelter in Muncie, Indiana saw the explosion of Pokemon Go within the community. With so many people walking around trying to catch rare Pokemon, and tons of dogs that need walking, they’ve come up with a genius idea. They have asked local Pokemon Go hunters to come down to the shelter and pick out a dog to walk while they’re playing the game, utilizing the new craze for the well-being of homeless dogs.

Gonorrhea Could One Day be Untreatable, Doctors Say

Gonorrhea has long been a sexually transmitted disease that is treated with a strong dose of antibiotics. However, it may soon become untreatable as it develops resistance to the two antibiotics left that can treat it: azithromycin and ceftriaxon.
CBS News reports that antibiotic resistant strains of this STD have more than quadrupled in the United States.

Betty Crocker Recalls the Following Cake Mixes

General Mills has recently been having a lot of trouble with contaminated flour, leading to several recalls. Next up on the list is a recall of two flavors of the beloved Betty Crocker cake mix due to possible contamination with the E. coli O121 bacteria. The two flavors affected by this recall are the Betty Crocker Delights Super Moist Carrot Cake Mix and the Betty Crocker Delights Super Moist Party Rainbow Chip Cake Mix.
Both of these flavors contain Wondra flour flavor chips, which was initially recalled on July 1st.
