Research: Diabetes Drugs Don’t Benefit Cardiovascular Health

Nine classes of diabetes drugs were put to the test to determine whether or not they elongated patients’ lives or helped lower the risk of a major cardiovascular incident when compared to a placebo. The test showed that these drugs were not as effective as previously thought in doing so, and that they do not increase survival rates in those with Type 2 diabetes.

Scientists May Soon Make Muscles and Bones from Human Stem Cells Quickly

Scientists discovered that they are able to combine positive and negative signals which can turn stem cells down certain pathways. This allows them to develop into certain tissue, including tissue of the heart, muscle, or bone. The hope is that the tissue will be created in days, rather than weeks or months, as are usually required. This will allow the tissue to be much more effective much more quickly.

Apple and GlaxoSmithKline Team Up for an Arthritis Study

In March of last year, Apple created the ResearchKit, a medical platform which turns the iPhone into a diagnostic tool for clinical trials and studies. It allows companies wishing to perform trials to team up easily with those wishing to participate. Recently, GlaxoSmithKline announced itself as the first ever partner for the clinical trials, as it will be conducting a study on rheumatoid arthritis.

New Zika Case Raises Questions on Transmission

An unnamed individual in Utah has been reported to be carrying the Zika virus, but no one is quite sure how the virus was transmitted to the person. Experts are already clear that Zika transmits through mosquito bites and sexual contact with someone who is infected with the virus. They are also certain that the virus is tied to microcephaly in unborn babies. However, this case is incredibly unusual, because the person has no known risk factors for developing the virus.

New Study Suggests Alzheimer’s May Be in the Brain as Young as Preschool

A gene which may be related to Alzheimer’s disease can show itself as early as preschool, according to a new study published in the journal Neurology. 
Up until now, scientists have been focusing on the proteins that build up in the brain as a way to try and treat Alzheimer’s, yet thus far, developing drugs for this has not been very promising. As such, researchers are pointing to a new theory which states that Alzheimer’s is actually a developmental disorder that may begin as early as childhood, progressing as the person ages.
