By any reckoning, the claim made this week by al-Qaeda-linked fighters that they were targeted with chemical weapons by the Syrian government in Idlib province – their final holdout in Syria – should have been treated by the western media with a high degree of scepticism.
That the US and other western governments enthusiastically picked up those claims should not have made them any more credible.

An investigator from the OPCW argued that the gas attack in Douma, Syria on April 7, 2018 was not an aerial attack, but the chemical weapons were manually placed on the ground, suggesting that Bashar al-Assad's regime was not responsible for the attack.

Last month, 2020 U.S. presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders stirred controversy at a CNN town hall after answering a loaded question about whether his position on extending voting rights to incarcerated felons barred any exceptions such as the Boston Marathon bomber currently on death row. It was impossible for Sanders to respond honestly without being entrapped by the inclusion of Dzhokar Tsarnaev as an example, but the self-professed ‘democratic socialist’ gave a reflective explanation of the complexities of the issue behind his reasoning.

Last week, John Bolton, warned Iran “that any attack on United States interests or on those of our allies will be met with unrelenting force.” This apparently was the signal for reporting explosion damage to four oil tankers off the coast of Fujairah.

With the beat of Washington’s war drums continuing to grow, particularly following the Monday revelation of a government plan to send as many as 120,000 troops to counter Iran, the threat of an “accidental” provocation or a “false flag” is also becoming increasingly likely. As MintPress recently reported, the possibility of an “accident” leading to open conflict between the U.S. and Iran is now being openly stated by top European officials — such as U.K.

As tensions between the U.S. and Iran threaten to boil over, the probability of a provocation or “accident” that would provoke hostilities between the two countries is higher than ever. U.K. Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt, after meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, openly stated as much on Monday, telling reporters in Brussels that the U.K. was worried of a conflict breaking out between the U.S.

This past Easter weekend saw a string of brutal terrorist bombings strike the country of Sri Lanka, targeting churches, luxury hotels and shopping malls, and killing over 300 people, injuring many others. Victims include Christian worshipers as well as a number of western citizens.
