A friend, who apparently doesn't read this blog, just called me astounded that this week 1.3 million Americans would be losing their unemployment benefis. He had just found out. "What are they going to do," he asked. I mentioned something about turning their anger, in a decidedly non-electoral way towards the individual conservatives in Congress, who have authored their impending misery.
I asked one of the sharpest minds I know on Capitol Hill if there's a single issue facing Congress right now-- just one-- that separates conservatives from progressives. He didn't miss a beat: the Social Security Enhancement and Protection Act and the Strengthening Social Security. Act. Yesterday we had a guest post from the progressive candidate for the Maine Senate seat, Shenna Bellows, on the topic.
I don't suppose Lizard Man conferred with Elizabeth Warren before he offered a free pass to reelection to Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown. But the reptilian Schumer was boasting to Isaac Chotiner for an interview in the New Republic that that is exactly what he did in 2012.
"I was a Republican because I thought that those were the people who best supported markets. I think that is not true anymore. I was a Republican at a time when I felt like there was a problem that the markets were under a lot more strain. It worried me whether or not the government played too activist a role." Can you guess who said that? Hint: think of the 5 most brilliant progressives in Congress. still not? Narrow it down to 3 then.
In recent days, we've been talking a lot about the push from progressives in the Senate, particularly Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders to combat the never-ending conservative goal of whittling away at Social Security by actually fighting to expand it.
Can Hillary Clinton articulate a progressive vision the way Elizabeth Warren can? Or do you have to have one before you can articulate one? Ted Cruz can certainly articulate the reactionary vision.I'm not a Hillary Clinton hater. In some sense, I respect her and even admire her. But would I vote for her-- and all that baggage weighing her down-- for president? On the one hand-- America is so overdue for a woman president. On the other hand, it means Wall Street in control again. Is she better than any of the garbage the GOP is looking at-- Cruz, Paul, Christie, Bush, Rubio?
