The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently approved a doubling in the use of Dow Chemical’s controversial new herbicide Enlist Duo.
A mix of glyphosate and 2,4 D, Enlist Duo received the green light for use in nine more key farming states. After major backlash and lawsuits, the new herbicide was limited to only six states during its initial approval in 2014.
“They” in my title refers to the major players in our food system. First is Big Ag—Monsanto and Dow being prominent—and those industrial farms that use Big Ag’s products. Second are large food corporations—General Mills and the like—who churn out processed foods and store their goods in warehouses before moving them to market. Third are those who breed and raise the livestock we eat. Fourth are those who import food from overseas.
Edward Snowden’s revelations on the voracious appetite of spying on all and sundry by the National Security Agency and allied agencies should not give pause for too much comment, other than to affirm a general premise: activists and non-government groups are to be feared. Non-profits are seen as potential threats, though what to is sometimes unclear. Any government worth its salt should be afraid of its citizens – the latter must make the former accountable; the former must hold to the contractual bargain with citizens.
