MANHATTAN — Since President Donald Trump’s election, cities across the United States have seen a sharp decline in undocumented immigrants reporting crimes against them, from domestic abuse to sexual assault.
In a speech before law enforcement officials in Long Island, New York on Friday, President Donald Trump celebrated his administration’s crackdown on immigration and encouraged police officers to be “rough” with those they detain—a statement that was widely seen as an explicit call for police brutality.
“Don’t be too nice,” Trump said after referencing “thugs being thrown into the back of a paddy wagon.”

SANTA ANA, Calif. — U.S. immigration arrests increased nearly 40 percent in early 2017 as newly emboldened agents under President Donald Trump detained more than 40,000 people suspected of being in the country illegally — with a renewed focus on immigrants without criminal convictions.
DALLAS — Thousands of people marched and rallied in downtown Dallas on Sunday to call for an overhaul of the nation’s immigration system and end to what organizers said is an aggressive deportation policy.
Organizers who called Sunday’s event the “Dallas Mega March” said President Donald Trump’s executive orders restricting travel from predominantly Muslim countries in the Middle East are discriminatory. They also want an end to hate crimes and hate speech they contend have proliferated since the November presidential election.
