While the long-term results of yesterday’s summit between President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un remain to be seen, the historic encounter is, of course, causing waves throughout the world.
The summit resulted in a brief document in which North Korea agreed to an eventual denuclearization in exchange for security guarantees from the U.S. Trump also announced that the U.S. would be suspending the joint military exercises with South Korea that have kept Pyongyang paranoid of an invasion.

This week Chuck Ochelli joins me to discuss geopolitics and the problems of the world. We start off discussing the recent Singapore Summit between North Korea and the US. Chuck and I both offer our opinions and analysis of the “deal” that is being hammered out by Trump. We talk about the realities of what is actually being presented, and discuss the larger context of what this may mean for the Korean Peninsula.

In time it will become evident whether the joint statement signed by U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jung-un on Tuesday will lead to a formal end to the Korean War, denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and an end what the North sees as U.S. provocations against Pyongyang.

While Trump was quick to take a victory lap after signing a non-binding letter (of intent) with North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un to implement the denuclearization of North Korea, several questions have emerged among which:

Kim Jong-un confirmed his commitment to the “complete denuclearization of Korean Peninsula,” in a joint document signed with President Trump at Singapore on Tuesday.
According to the press, the text does not mention “complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization,” however, it does reaffirm the Panmunjom Declaration, signed by Kim on April 27, 2018.

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un are in some ways, rather alike. Both are brash and fearless. Both are easy with bellicose rhetoric, but both are also open to dealmaking.
Today, this process began to unfold in a most visible manner on the world stage.

Many hackles get raised worldwide at the mention of the name of America’s present National Security Adviser, John Bolton. Most recently, the fiery hardliner made news when he ruffled the feathers of the North Korean leadership, by suggesting that the “Libya model” be applied to North Korea’s present regime.

WASHINGTON — United States President Donald Trump’s cancellation of next month’s summit with the Supreme Leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Kim Jong-un, came as a bit of a surprise and a jarring break from developments such as the release of three U.S. hostages by Pyongyang and the country’s apparent follow-through on a pledge to demolish its nuclear test facility.

Virtually everyone in the US faults North Korea for threatening to cancel the Trump-Kim summit scheduled for June 12 in Singapore. No one, including the liberal media, bothers to address North Korea’s conditions for a successful summit or the reasons for its warning about a cancellation. Let’s review the matter with some objectivity.
