Colombia Bans Glyphosate from Being Sprayed on Coca (Cocaine) Crops

In a seemingly twisted turn of events, Colombia, known the world over as a center of illicit drug trade, will remove glyphosate chemicals from their coca crops – the raw material used to make cocaine. If the irony is lost on you, that means that while we here in the US can’t even count on eating a non-glyphosate coated apple or corn-chips, people who want to do lines of ‘glyphosate-free’ drugs can do so in Colombia.

It is a sometimes overly rich recipe, starched with violence and populism, but Latin American politics is something to behold. In the Americas, experiments have been run and tried with brutal consequences. Revolutions and counter-revolutions have been plotted and enacted. The good have tended to be a short time in office, while the coup d’état has had something of a long history.

Bolivia: New Factory to Make Coca Products for Medicinal Use

Bolivian president Evo Morales today inaugurated the first factory for coca-based products, highlighting their health benefits and medicinal uses.
The new plant, opened in a suburb of La Paz, will process around 75,000 tonnes of coca leaf a year to make drinkable infusions, such as coca mate and teas.
