Two thousand years ago, Jesus taught an oppressed, occupied people the ways of mercy and nonviolent resistance. In the intervening centuries, some strains of Christianity have transformed themselves from these humble roots into dominant, imperial forces.
Their “Christian” voices speak the language of the Bible, but their ideologies have little to do with the Bible’s message. Their followers – knowingly or unknowingly – encourage authoritarianism and racism with a stamp of approval from God.
While it’s widely known about Israel’s systematic persecution of Palestine’s native Arab population, only a very few Americans or Europeans are really aware of the well-documented history of Israeli discrimination against native Christians in the Holy Land.
This morning, embattled Israeli Prime Minister and Likud leader, Benjamin Netanyahu, tweeted out this message to “Christians around the world.” Presumably he means his political support base of evangelical Christians, or more specifically, Christian Zionists, residing in America.
The largest pro-Israel organization in the United States is not composed of Jews, but of Christian evangelicals, with a total membership of 7 million, more than 2 million more members than the entirety of the American Jewish community.

On 18 July, US Vice President Mike Pence delivered the keynote speech at the annual summit of Christians United for Israel (CUFI). Founded in 2006 by Pastor John Hagee, an evangelist from San Antonio, CUFI claims to be the largest pro-Israel group in the United States, with three million members. Hagee endorsed Donald Trump for president in May 2016.
Donald Trump announced on 6 December that the United States was recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Most notable about his speech was not what he said, or how he said it, but the presence and demeanor of vice-president Mike Pence. Though an element almost entirely missing from the reams of analysis following Trump’s statement, Pence’s beliefs do much to explain Trump’s motivation.
