campaign finance reform

NAFTA is 20

I was thrilled this week when Guy Cecil and Michael Bennet got on board and gave the Shenna Bellows campaign the DSCC's big thumbs up. Hopefully, that will be the beginning of the end for fake moderate Susan Collins in Maine. So, RIGHT ON GUY CECIL and RIGHT ON Michael Bennet. I will refrain from any gratuitously nasty statements about the two of them for at least… well, I hope forever. Next up: South Dakota prairie populist Rick Weiland.

A Democracy Dependent Upon The Funders

The video above comes from a TED Talk Lawrence Lessig did last year. He contends, correctly, that we have lost our representative democracy and that we have to act to get it back. Choosing between garbage candidates like David Jolly and Alex Sink won't help anyone get anything back. All it will do is perpetuate the deterioration of American democracy. This short news story from the Associated Press this week shouldn't surprise anyone by it's specifics. But it is instructional nonetheless.

What Do Rich People Want In Return For Their Campaign Contributions?

Environmental champion Tom Steyer elected Terry McAuliffe governor of Virginia-- so why the glum face?Tom Steyer is a San Francisco billionaire and a dedicated environmental activist. Last year, he spent $11 million helping elect one of the most corrupt corporate whores in American politics, Virginia's new governor, Terry McAuliffe.

Would Republicans String Up The Koch Brothers If Oklahoma Disappears Into A Giant Sink Hole?

In the video above, the relationship between swarms of Oklahoma earthquakes and fracking, seems obvious. Koch brothers-protected fracking is starting to devastate a wide swathe of the middle of the country-- and Republicans are willfully oblivious to the dangers their ideological policy agenda is causing in red states like Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Kansas.

Finally a picture emerges of the system by which the Kochs moved and obscured the sources of a bare minimum $407M outside the campaign-finance system in the 2012 election cycle

Efforts to trace the movement of money contributed, raised, and funneled by the Koch Brothers' "network" during the 2012 electoral cycle have so far produced this org chart. No wait, this is a diagram of the London Underground, which is much, much easier to understand."It is a very sophisticated and complicated structure. It's designed to make it opaque as to where the money is coming from and where the money is going. No layperson thought this up.

Dana Milbank says, "The Supreme Court is poised to legalize corruption"

Is Justice Nino's great legal mind preparingto further roll back campaign spending limits?"It is what it is."-- Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, pressed aboutthe Court's previous mangling of campaign finance lawby KenIs it any wonder that some people herald Justice Nino's as one of the great legal minds of our time? (They must be very stupid people, you say? But of course!)So meanwhile, while we're all wrapped up in the Shutdown Follies, back at the Supreme Court . . . .
