Bradley Smith

Mon vieil ami Bradley nous a quittés. De son vivant, je ne pouvais lui cacher ma vive sympathie. Je l’admirais mais, par souci de discrétion, je n’osais trop le lui montrer ou le lui dire. Maintenant qu’il n’est plus de ce monde, je peux aller plus loin et déclarer sans ambages qu’il aura été à mes yeux l’un des hommes les plus dignes d’admiration que j’aie rencontrés durant ma longue existence. Il est mort le jour de ses 86 ans. J’ai 87 ans et je sens, comme le disait Céline, que « la Parque me gratte le fil ».

My old friend Bradley has left us. During his lifetime I could not hide my strong liking for him. I admired him but, out of discretion, I dared not show or say it to him very much. Now that he is no longer of this world I can go ahead and declare outright that, amongst all the people I have met in my long existence, he was one of the most worthy of admiration. He died on his 86th birthday. I am 87 years old and feel, as Louis-Ferdinand Celine put it, “the black Fate scraping my thread”.
