Authoritarianism

Anglo-America: Regression and Reversion in the Modern World

What does it mean when the US and British financial systems launder hundreds of billions of dollars of illicit funds stolen by world leaders while their governments turn a ‘blind eye’, and yet the very same Anglo-American officials investigate, prosecute, fine and arrest officials from rival governments, rival banks and political leaders for corruption?

In A Trumpf Regime, Will You Be A Thought Criminal?

A few days ago, we mentioned in passing that fans of Herr Trumpf are "looking for a fuehrer, a caudillo... end of story." It isn't the first time we've attributed Trumpf's rise in popularity-- despite his obvious short-comings-- to this need for a powerful daddy figure among-- I hate to say it-- life's losers. Buffeted by economic and cultural stresses, utterly brainwashed by the twisted faux-reality of Hate Talk Radio and Fox News, millions of Americans are ready to give up on democracy.

The Resistible Rise of Global Fascism

What is Fascism? Recently Chris Hedges wrote of an imperialist US that is infected by “the virus of fascism, wrapped in the American flag, held aloft by the Christian cross and buttressed by white supremacy.” Hedges was not using the term fascism as it would be used by a political theorist or historian. Could A Military Coup Happen Here? Most Republicans Would Welcome One

CNN released a new poll yesterday, but there were no questions about the presidential primaries per se. Question #34 was: "Do you happen to know what religion Barack Obama is? Is he Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Mormon, Muslim, something else, or not religious?" Although it was a plurality, only 39% got it right-- Obama is Protestant/Christian. The second biggest answer-- at 29%-- was Muslim.

Juxtaposing Anarchy: From Chaos to Cause

It is a term that stands in direct contrast to the archetype of society we have become accustomed to: hierarchical, highly-structured, and authoritative. Because of this, it carries negative connotations. Merriam-Webster, the consensus source of meaning within the dominant paradigm, defines anarchy as: a situation of confusion and wild behavior in which the people in a country, group, organization, etc., are not controlled by rules or laws; or, a state of disorder due to absence or non-recognition of authority.

Remembering Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew -- and looking to the legacy of his "authoritarian capitalism"

Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew (1923-2015)by KenWe can't let the passing of former Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew yesterday go unremarked upon, and The New Yorker's John Cassidy has done a honey of a remembrance, "Can Authoritarian Capitalism Outlive Lee Kuan Yew?," which begins with the observation: "Unlike Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, Lee Kuan Yew, the longtime leader of S
