Sochi Syrian Guarantors Meeting February 14/19

“The trilateral summit … will take place in Sochi on Feb. 14,” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said in an interview with Hurriyet newspaper on Thursday, TASS reported.According to NTV, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are expected to discuss the situation in the Syrian de-escalation zone Idlib and the withdrawal of US forces from Syria at the upcoming meeting.The previous summit of the three presidents was held in September last year in Tehran.Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday that a low-level international meeting on Syria would be held in mid-February in the Kazakh capital Astana with the participation of delegations from the Syrian government, opposition, Russia, Turkey and Iran, and observers from the United Nations and Jordan.

Two meetings.. One in Astana. One in Sochi Sana

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that meeting of the leaders of guarantor states of Astana process on Syria is scheduled to be held in the Russian city of Sochi on February 14.Lavrov, in his speech to students of Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University, Bishkek on Monday, said: ” the prospects for a settlement in Syria will be considered within a week to 10 days, i.e. on February 14, in the upcoming summit of the presidents of Russia, Iran and Turkey in Sochi.”He added that the work is under way to complete the formation of the committee of discussing the Syrian constitution.“In parallel with the war against terrorism, there is a current political track in which Russia, Iran and Turkey adopted an initiative based on decisions of the Syrian national dialogue congress held a year ago in Sochi to set up a committee to discuss the constitution,” Lavrov said, adding that “work on this initiative is now complete.”

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem, who arrived in Tehran on Tuesday at the head of a delegation, met his Iranian counterpart to discuss bilateral ties and the latest political developments regarding the Syrian crisis.   Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif congratulated the Syrian nation for their victory over terrorists and called for increasing collaboration between Damascus and other regional countries.

Amid intensified consultations among the guarantors of the Astana track with regards to forming the constitutional committee, Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem and the UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, arrived in Tehran on Tuesday.
