When Pompeo claims it would be “unfortunate” if Turkey leaves NATO, I’m curious as to what the context for the use of the word ‘unfortunate’ is? What or who could make this move unfortunate?
Unfortunate regrettable or deplorable: marked by or inviting misfortune
Greener Pastures Is Pompeo suggesting that if Turkey leaves NATO (or doesn't get back in line) that departure would be marked by or inviting misfortune onto itself? If so, who would deliver said misfortune on Turkey? Or create the circumstances that would lead to misfortune and regret?I don't think Turkey would view it as a negative should they decide to exit NATO.To my mind if Turkey was to leave/has left NATO they would certainly do so with the idea that the move was to greener or more favourable pastures.....Better places and spaces. Ya know what I mean?I'll underline Pompeo's words. Threats? Or not?Keeping in mind Pompeo is ex CIA (if that's possible) and head of State.Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan should resist any temptation to leave NATO in pursuit of Russian friendship, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday.
“It would be unfortunate for NATO; it’d be unfortunate for the United States, and I think even more unfortunate for the people of Turkey if that were to become the case,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told radio show host Tony Katz.Pompeo was responding specifically the issue of Erdogan’s “Eastern-looking” foreign policy, at a time when leaders around the world are concerned about the Turkish president’s outreach to Russian President Vladimir Putin. When asked if the United States is approaching “a moment where Turkey’s future as a NATO nation and as an ally comes into question,” he was uncertain. “I hope not,” Pompeo replied. “We are hopeful that Turkey and President Erdogan will come to understand the U.S. is a better partner than Iran, and the direction that President Erdogan ought to go is to support deeper relationships with the United States and with Europe and with NATO.”Erdogan and the Iranian regime represent different historic power centers of the Islamic world, but they have found common cause in support for the Palestinians against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a time when Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations have moved to forge “new friendships” with Israel. Turkey also imports Iranian oil, while Erdogan has hosted diplomatic summits with Putin and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.“They have been an important NATO partner,” Pompeo said in May. “We need their behavior to reflect the objectives of NATO, and that’s what we’re diligently working to do: to get them to rejoin NATO, in a way, with their actions, consistent with what we’re trying to achieve in NATO. And not take actions that undermine its efforts.”
Isn't Pompeo talking like Turkey's already out of NATO?"They have been an important NATO partner" That's past tense talk. He confirms they are out with the statement "get them to rejoin NATO"Pompeo claims Turkey has undermined NATO? "not take actions that undermine its efforts.”Wasn't it the US that backed a coup and arms those that attack Turkey? Sure was!
Concurrently, Erdogan’s overtures to Putin have raised the possibility that Turkey will deploy advanced Russian-made anti-aircraft weapons systems, over the objections of NATO allies who fear that Russia will gain insight into western military capabilities.
As I've written previously the idea that Turkey will deploy Russian made anti aircraft weapons has very little to do with fears of insights into western capabilities and much more to do with Turkey, actually being able to defend itself against further attack from it's erstwhile allies or their proxies.

"So if the US does not plan to attack Turkey or support those who intend to attack it, they don't need to be afraid of the S-400 deal. If the American goal is to deprive Turkey of the defense system and attack it, then this is a completely different matter," Bozkurt concluded.
And then we have the potential overthrow of MBS to watch out for.
