Once upon a time in the United States there was a general perception that organizations like the FBI and the CIA were both apolitical and high-minded, existing only to calmly and professionally promote the safety and security of the nation. But the relative respectability of America’s national security agencies largely vanished in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist incidents.
