Great Lakes up to 86.8% Ice Cover

The Great Lakes are now up to 86.8% ice cover.  There’s still a good deal of open water on Lakes Michigan and Ontario.  As of early Sat. morning, the ice cover on the  individual lakes is as follows:  Lake Michigan 67.3%, Lake Superior 94.9%, Lake Huron 95.3%, Lake Erie 96%, Lake Ontario 57.1%

Frozen Waves in Nantucket:

 The unusually cold winter of Massachusetts produced an incredible phenomenon 100 miles southeast of Boston on the island of Nantucket recently: frozen waves, or, as some are describing them, Slurpee waves.

 KEEP IN MIND- THE ATLANTIC OCEAN IS A BODY OF SALT WATER- Why am I mentioning this fact?!  Ocean water, being salty, requires colder temperatures to freeze!

'Ocean water freezes just like freshwater, but at lower temperatures. Fresh water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit but seawater freezes at about 28.4 degrees Fahrenheit , because of the salt in it.

 Cold Records Broken

This weekend broke several records for cold temperatures across Ontario.Barrie hit -30 Monday morning, the coldest February 16th ever registered for the city. The former record of -26.5 Celsius was set back in 1987.In Muskoka -35.4 is also a record, one degree colder than the old record set in 1963.Wiarton hit -34.3, breaking a record of -25.6 set just last year.Windsor, Waterloo, London and Welland also hit record cold temperatures on Monday.

UPDATE: February was the coldest month on record for Quebec, parts of Ontario MT @JayScotland: Low temp records smashed this AM across Golden Horseshoe. Hamilton, Welland broke records from 1870s
