NATO Secretary General says Alliance open to further cooperation with Azerbaijan
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on Wednesday (15 January 2014) that the Alliance looked forward to strengthen its cooperation with his country and thanked him for his nation’s support to NATO operations. “We are determined to reinvigorate our political dialogue including on strategic issues, such as energy security and counter terrorism,” the Secretary General said.
The President of Azerbaijan visited NATO headquarters for talks with the Secretary General and to address the North Atlantic Council.
Mr. Fogh Rasmussen said that Allies appreciate the “steadfast support” provided by Azerbaijani troops in Afghanistan and appreciate the political support to NATO operations through over-flight and transit lines. Azerbaijan also contributes to the training of Afghan security forces.
The Secretary General said that continuing reforms in Azerbaijan is also of importance and said that NATO will continue its assistance to the country. “I believe we can deepen our dialogue and cooperation across the spectrum of our partnership,” he said. Mr. Fogh Rasmussen added that this month also marks the 20th anniversary of the Partnership for Peace programme. Azerbaijan has been a staunch member of the programme since its beginning. “Our Partnership for Peace is founded on a commitment to democratic values and principles,” the Secretary General said, adding that the programme offers a strong framework for dialogue and cooperation.
