Visit of the Deputy Chief of Defence of Qatar to NATO

On 5 February 2014, the NATO Political Affairs and Security Policy Division organised a visit to NATO Headquarters of the Deputy Chief of Defence of Qatar, Major General Thani Bin Jassim Al-Thani, and his accompanying delegation of high-ranking military officials, as well as the Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the Kingdom of Belgium, H.E. Sheikh Ali Bin Jassim Al-Thani, and the Defense Attaché at the Embassy of the State of Qatar to the Kingdom of Belgium, Brigadier Hadi Mohammed Al-Shahwani.
Topics discussed included NATO’s Istanbul Cooperation Initiative; NATO’s Current Political Agenda; Military Cooperation in the Framework of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative; and NATO’s Transformation and Outreach to the Middle East and the Gulf region.
The group met with H.E. Ambassador Alexander Vershbow, NATO Deputy Secretary General, with H.E. Ambassador Mehmet Fatih Ceylan, Permanent Representative of Turkey on the North Atlantic Council, with Mr James Appathurai, Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy, with Brigadier General Ivan Caruso, Deputy Director Cooperation & Regional Security Division, International Military Staff (IMS) and military colleagues from the Cooperation & Regional Security Division in the IMS, and with Dr. Rolf Schwarz, Political Officer, Middle East and North Africa Section, Political Affairs and Security Policy Division.
