In a dazzling display of chutzpah, the White House is demanding that Congress demonstrate blind trust in a U.S. intelligence establishment headed by James Clapper, a self-confessed perjurer.
As I wrote earlier this week, much of the pretext for bombing Syria because of chemical weapons use is overshadowed by more fundamental motivations on the part of the Obama administration. Namely, to “send a message” to Iran – the idea being that if Assad can cross Obama’s red line without consequence then the Iranian regime will believe U.S. demands to not develop nuclear weapons aren’t backed up by military force.
The debate over Syria is on, and it looks like libertarian-leaning Republicans like Sen. Rand Paul and Rep. Justin Amash are leading a strong Republican charge against President Obama’s plan for airstrikes in Syria. Much to the consternation of neocon spear points John McCain and Lindsey Graham, the watered-down version of Obama’s proposal passed in the Senate (10 to 7) yesterday is headed for a big fight in the House, thanks in part to Amash and other Republicans who have expressed principled skepticism about the continued use of the U.S military as a global police force.
War... but not as much as McCainBoehner, Cantor and House Intelligence Committee chair Mike Rogers (R-MI) are all backing Obama's flimsy excuses to rush to war against Syria but will they and their Beltway Establishment allies-- who have certainly tossed out the so-called Hastert Rule on this one-- be able to swing the majority of Republicans into Obama's corner?
