In a recent episode of Redacted Tonight with Lee Camp, Empire Files host Abby Martin describes America’s desire to overthrow the Venezuelan regime as a part of its desire to get at Venezuela’s massive oil reserves. Martin discusses how this aspect of US foreign policy is not new and continues on, perhaps with a new vigour, under the Trump administration.

US president Donald Trump hoped to create economic pressure on the citizens of Venezuela and Iran by passing sanctions that would damage their oil market, among others.
Now that Trump’s sanctions have increased the price of oil, some OPEC member nations want to increase production in order to compensate for the loss of supply in the market from Iran and Venezuela to get a handle on the price of oil, which is on the rise.
However, in order to push through an agreement to increase production, OPEC needs unanimous agreement amongst its members.

Pompeo singled out these three countries as having abhorrent human rights records: China, Cuba and Venezuela.

Presently, some $2 billion worth of arms deals are presently hitting a snag over how settlement is to be made for defence transactions between Russia and India as US sanctions stand in the way.
