Pulling down statues may make us feel good but will not eliminate the root causes of racism and discrimination.

The protests to the cruel killing of George Floyd and many others before him and even some after him have not remained confined to the United States or among black people alone, but have given rise to a global movement for change and an end to racism and discrimination.
Following the explosion of protests and rioting following the death of George Floyd, “Black Lives Matter” activists in Seattle proceeded to occupy seven city blocks with the blessing of the city’s Democratic mayor, fashioning it into a self-proclaimed Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ), and later changed its name to Capitol Hill Organized Protest (CHOP).

The system-wide challenges the United States faces with policing are entrenched and deeply rooted. When the historical and current practices of police are examined, it is evident police have been designed to uphold the status quo including racial injustice and class inequality. Whenever political movements develop to respond to racial and class unfairness, the police have undermined their politically-protected constitutional rights.
Strangely, Israel's large Palestinian minority has found itself treated both as much-abused, second-class citizens and as an unwilling shop-window dummy on which Israel can hang its pretensions of fairness and equality.

Protesters are toppling slaveowner-statues from one end of the U.S. to the other. Given that slavery is nothing more than legalized kidnapping, the only surprise is that it’s taken them so long. No one would honor Jeffrey Epstein with a statue, so why honor generations of rapists and child molesters who came before him?
