A few hours ago-- and in the face of rapidly rising nationalism in Europe and America-- Pope Francis described differences of faith, race and ideas as a richness, not a danger, and called for political solutions to end wars in Syria, Yemen and elsewhere.

Fox News reported that a Roman Catholic priest was removed from his post in a Chicago neighborhood by his cardinal (bishop) and sent away for “pastoral support” for burning an LGBT “rainbow flag”, after reciting a prayer of exorcism.

Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, is calling for Pope Francis to resign, claiming that the pontiff knew about abuse perpetrated by Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who recently resigned amid accusations that he engaged in sex with adult seminarians as well as sexually abusing minors. [...]

It was long overdue, but Pope Francis’s letter of condemnation and apology regarding the abuse of children by Catholic priests did sent a few ripples of comfort and reckoning.  He conceded that the Church “showed no care for the little ones; we abandoned them”.  He acknowledged the “heart-wrenching pain” of the victims who had been assaulted by the clerical class, and the cries “long ignored, kept quiet or silenced”.
