In recent years, income inequality has become a major political and economic issue in America. It is true that, adjusted for inflation, average hourly earnings of production and nonsupervisory employees in the private sector have barely changed between 1979 and 2015. But wages do not provide the full picture of workers’ earnings.
While hard-line Remainers are convinced that people in poorer areas were somehow conned into voting against their own interests, Cornwall, the UK’s largest recipient of EU regional development funds, was widely mocked for voting Leave and then requesting reassurance that Westminster would fill the funding gap. As Cornish voters have clearly been aware, however, the money the EU has seen fit to spend in Britain is less than the amount the UK sends to the EU in the first place.
Connecticut was a tax haven in the North East until 1991, when it enacted an income tax that has become more and more progressive over the years. The result? Citizens fleeing the state for more tax-friendly ones and, ironically, less revenue for Connecticut.
