That's a condition in which the brain does not develop properly resulting in a smaller than normal head. In recent years, it has been said that unusual numbers of microcephaly have been caused by the Zika virus, but this report says that it could be related to the DTap vaccine. Other conditions associated with this vaccine include brain damage in young children, heart problems, meningitis, and epilepsy.

The number of Zika cases spread by mosquito bites in Florida has risen to 25, and with the number expected to rise further, airplanes have been flying over Miami spraying naled, a neurotoxic insecticide which kills adult mosquitoes. Some scientists are warning that naled may be more dangerous than the Zika virus itself.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is advising pregnant women, women considering becoming pregnant, and their partners not to visit a small community just north of Miami, Florida, where the Zika virus is beginning to spread via mosquito bites.

US Health officials have become increasingly concerned by the rate Zika is spreading in the territory of Puerto Rico. The disease is spreading so quickly, that it is claimed as many as 50 pregnant women a day are becoming infected. Because of this, the Centers for Disease Control is urging Puerto Rico to spray the affected area with pesticides.

Ten pregnant women in the Dallas area are suspected to have Zika. None of them have developed it from a mosquito bite while in Texas, but all have travelled to Zika-infected countries within the past several months.
Health officials have confirmed that there are more than a dozen cases in North Texas alone. This is particularly concerning, as the virus can spread by a mosquito biting an infected individual and then biting another person, thus carrying the infection.

The second baby with Zika-lined microcephaly was born in the United States in New Jersey on June 1. She was delivered at Hackensack University Medical Center where the mother discovered via ultrasound that her new daughter had serious side effects and complications due to her infection with the Zika virus. Though this is the second born in the US, it’s the first in the contiguous United States.
Microcephaly is characterized by incomplete brain development and an unusually small head. Many children with this disorder also have intellectual disabilities.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said this week that the Zika virus is “scarier than we initially thought.” The agency made a connection between Zika and microcephaly, a horrible birth defect that causes babies to be born with small heads and brains, in pregnant women. It also suspected that Zika causes Guillain-Barré, a nervous system disorder that can temporarily paralyze people and cause permanent brain damage.

Genetically modified mosquitoes designed to limit the spread of the Zika virus will likely soon be unleashed in the southern United States, as the federal government said today decided to permit a field test in the Florida Keys.
